Cures for hiccups - House call: expert advice on health and fitness - Brief Article
Ebony, Oct, 2003
Q Since I was a child, I have hated to get hiccups. What is it that causes them, and what's the best way to get them to stop? Help!
S.B., Gary, Ind.
A Hiccups are repeated spasms of the diaphragm, followed by quick closings of the glottis. They can be triggered by swallowing hot or irritating foods or liquids. Many home remedies are based on accumulating carbon dioxide in the blood (holding your breath or breathing into a paper bag). Drinking water quickly, gently pulling on the tongue and gently rubbing the eyeballs are other popular remedies that seem to work well.
