Manicures, pedicures & massages: brothers need—and are getting—special treatment, too - Man style - Brief Article

Ebony, Oct, 2003

TRADITION being what it is, men, for the longest, have shied away and wouldn't begin to think about getting the personal attention and grooming that women favor, describing it as "a female thing." But times and attitudes are changing--quickly and dramatically.

There is an emerging mind-set among many men who, in the face of old stereotypes, are shunning old hang-ups and are enjoying the benefits of such special treatments as manicures, pedicures and massages. They say it's a part of "full-body grooming and relaxation" that every man should make a part of his regular routine. No longer do they consider it being pampered, just being good to themselves, steps to help them present themselves in the best possible way.

"With the way the economy has gone, many men now want to get whatever edge they can," says New York salon owner John Allan. "And the way that many get it is through their personal appearance."

Radio personality Big Tigger agrees, saying: "There's just so much a man can do to groom himself, then he has to realize that someone else can do some things better for him."

Women have realized that for years, and now men have finally gotten the message. So don't be surprised if the number of men frequenting the salons is soon equal to, or possibly greater than, the number of women.
