EBONY-Jet Publisher John H. Johnson; Robert Maynard, the late publisher of the Oakland Tribune; and Chuck Stone, the first president of the National Association of Black Journalists. In accepting the award for Johnson, EBONY Executive Editor Lerone Bennett Jr. called him "an American Original who virtually invented the Black consumer market and who almost singlehandedly created the foundations of the Black magazines and media stars of today."
