James Meredith, on August 9, 1963, became the first Black person to graduate from the University of Mississippi in the institution's 115-year-old history. In the fall of 1962, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Meredith risked his life when he successfully used the laws of integration and became the first Black student at the university.
His action, one of the most memorable moments during the Civil Rights Movement, led to rioting on the Oxford, Miss., campus that left two people dead.
