James Meredith, on August 9, 1963, became the first Black person to graduate from the University of Mississippi in the institution's 115-year-old history. In the fall of 1962, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Meredith risked his life when he successfully used the laws of integration and became the first Black student at the university.
