Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, president of the Rensselar Polytechnic Institute, became the first woman to be named Black Engineer of the Year by US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. Jackson, who is the first Black president at Rensselar, was recognized for her distinguished career, which includes becoming the first Black and the first woman to chair the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Jackson is also the first Black female to earn a doctorate (in theoretical physics) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She and her husband, Morris, have a son, Alan.
