Treating a sprained ankle - Expert Advice on Health and Fitness - Brief Article

Ebony, Nov, 2002

Q Since I have begun to work out on a regular basis in an effort to lose some weight, I have sprained my ankle a couple of times. In both cases, it has been very painful. What's the best way to treat a sprained ankle? M.T., Kansas City, Kan.

A You didn't reveal how you sprained your ankle, but it is common whether you are running, jumping or while you are doing any type of weight-bearing activity. Sprains are common sports injuries and occur when soft tissue or ligaments surrounding a joint are stretched or torn.

Treatment depends on how severe the sprain is. Doctors suggest that mild sprains be treated by wrapping the area with an elastic bandage or tape, applying ice to reduce swelling and elevating the ankle. With rest and immobilization, a simple sprain may take a week to heal. More severe sprains may take at least a six-week recovery period, unless surgery is required.

If you need a pain reliever, doctors suggest that you use ibuprofen instead of aspirin.
