New cars for 2004: automakers are trying to keep pace with consumer demand

Ebony, Nov, 2003

THIS new car season is marked by bigger, bolder, more high-tech-driven vehicles as automakers move SUVs and "crossovers" onto the fast track to keep pace with the consumer demand for performance, space, comfort and luxury. As a result, just over half the units sold in the United States these days are trucks.

Not only are a number of automakers expanding their lines with new models, they also are expanding the vehicles themselves with new "extended" versions of already-popular SUVs, providing more cargo and passenger space. Improved safety features are aimed at giving drivers a lot more confidence as they take to the road. Features like tire-pressure sensors let you know when you need air; stability control keeps you on track; dual-stage air bag systems evaluate speed and determine the impact to adjust the inflation; passenger-sensing air bags disable for smaller riders; side curtain air bags inflate at broadside collisions; on-board navigation systems help you find your way and hand-free communications systems help you stay in touch as needed. Then, of course, there are the state-of-the-art sound systems and passenger-compartment DVD players that are making it so much fun simply to go along for the ride. You might never again hear your kids ask, "Are we there yet?"

With its 3.6-liter V6 engine, CADILLAC CIS (left) puts out 255 horsepower of variable valve timing to develop 20 percent more peak power. The taut, lean body features the crisp edges of stealth aircraft, while sporting the traditional Cadillac grille. For safety's sake, the CTS has six air bags, including dual-stage and head-curtain, Xenon high-intensity headlamps, OnStar (with available hands-free calling) and StabiliTrak stabilizing system. Standard amenities include AM/FM stereo/cassette, CD with 7-speaker sound system, upgraded to a Bose digital 8-speaker sound with navigation system.

Currently in concept form, the CHRYSLER 300C is new, redefined version of the famous 300 model that will be available next April. The styling might be the first thing you noticed with its long hood, dramatic profile and dual exhaust, but performance is what you'll feet with a 5.7-liter, Hemi V8 engine, rack and pinion steering and independent rear suspension. Anti-lock brakes and traction control give in handling all that power.

The all-new LINCOLN LSE sports sedan is based on the LS V8 sports package, with a 3.9-liter engine pumping 280 horsepower. In addition to the LSE's chrome wheels, fog lamps, unique grille and wood interior, there also are safety features like anti-lock brakes and available side-curtain air bags, as well as conveniences like auto-dimming rear-view mirrors. Also offered is a DVD/Touch Screen Lincoln Navigation System.

If the new Chevrolet Malibu and its Malibu Maxx mate seem to ride with a little quiet European flair, it's because these are the first North American launches of GM's "Epsilon global architecture"--the basis for the new Saab 9-3 and Opel Vectra. The four-cylinder, 145-200 horsepower-driven Malibu features standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes with traction control on LS and LT models (optional on the base model), optional head curtain side-impact air bags and OnStar. The Malibu will be the first ear in its class to offer a factory-installed remote starter system that can be operated from about 200 feet away.

The Pontiac Grand Prix (left) has been a leader in style and performance for more than 40 years. The "WideTrack" four-wheel independent suspension features MacPherson struts with coil springs and is key to this sleek new model's flat cornering and smooth handling. For 2004, two versions of the 3.8-liter V6 engine are offered. The top-of-the-line GTP is powered by a high-performance Eaton supercharger pumping 260 horsepower. Sudden maneuvers--like emergency lane changes--can be aided by the car's StabiliTrak enhancement system.

The Saturn L300 (below) is loaded with standard safety features like four-wheel, anti-lock disc braking system, traction control, and the innovative head-curtain-side air bags that drop like inflated curtains on both sides of the passenger compartment. Among the many standard amenities are AM/FM stereo with CD and six speakers, Saturn Security System and heated dual outside power mirrors. Premium options include choices of sunroof, DVD entertainment for rear seat passengers, or OnStar.

With its sleek silhouette and V6, 225-horsepower engine, TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA is loaded with an abundance of standard equipment, including integrated fog lamps, sport-tuned suspension, ABS, tire-pressure warning, 6-speaker AM/FM CD stereo, auto-dimming electrochromatic rearview mirror and remote keyless entry. Options available for the SLE model include front and rear side-curtain air bags, stability control and touch-screen DVD navigation that can get you there with just a telephone number.
