MARLIN BRISCOE became the first Black starting quarterback in the National Football League as a member of the Denver Broncos in 1968. He opened the doors for other Black quarterbacks, whose numbers grew slowly, but at the beginning of this season, nine Black quarterbacks were at the helm of NFL teams.
Briscoe, who studied engineering and architecture, is an assistant project manager at the Roy W. Roberts II Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club and also is a football coach at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, Calif. Additionally, he has written a book, The First Black Quarterback: Marlin Briscoe's Journey To Break The Color Barrier And Start In The NFL, to inspire and enlighten people about what it takes to break barriers and overcome obstacles.
