Ebony, Nov, 2004
BORN TO WIN (Wiley, $24.95), co-written by Frances Clayton Gray and journalist Yanick Rice Lamb, is the only fully authorized biography of the late tennis star Althea Gibson, who broke the color line in tournament tennis and who was the Williams sisters and Arthur Ashe of her era. Gray, who was Gibson's confidante and caretaker and is now executor of her estate, and Lamb offer a revealing glimpse of Gibson, from her childhood in Harlem and her 10-year reign as champion of the all-Black American Tennis Association to the historic 1950 debut at Forest Hills and her momentous victories of 1957 and 1958, when she swept both Wimbledon and the U.S.
Open. The book is a compelling portrait of an athlete who helped revolutionize sports, leading the way for future champions from Billie Jean King to Arthur Ashe to Venus and Serena Williams. The book includes a foreword by Bill Cosby and an after-word by Venus Williams.
