Standing in the Shadows: Understanding and Overcoming Depression in Black Men
Veteran journalist and award-winning author John Head provides his readers with an insightful look into Black men and depression with his new book STANDING IN THE SHADOWS: UNDERSTANDING AND OVERCOMING DEPRESSION IN BLACK MEN (Broadway Books, $22.95). The book weaves the author's story of his struggle against depression with a cultural look at why depression in Black men remains an unspoken subject in Black America. The book describes Head's 25-year battle with depression, at one point he moved out of his family home and into an apartment so that his sons wouldn't see his depression. He calls for the Black community and the psychiatric community to end the silent suffering of Black men. Rosalynn Carter, former U.S. first lady and chairperson, the Carter Center Mental Health Task Force, says the book is "a call to action shedding light on the issue of depression in Black men and the barriers that prevent too many from seeking and receiving care."
