Heart murmurs

Ebony,  Nov, 2004

Q Please tell me the seriousness of a heart murmur, and how is this condition usually treated?

H.B.S., Virginia

A A heart murmur is an unusual heart sound that results from turbulent flow of blood through the heart. Doctors say many heart murmurs are not associated with a disease or condition of the heart and are often considered harmless.

When treatment is necessary, it is based on several factors, including symptoms, the risk of heart damage and the risk of sudden complications such as cardiac arrest and stroke. In some cases, open-heart surgery is required to correct a defect.
