'Silent' heart attacks - House Call: expert advice on health and fitness - Brief Article
Ebony, Dec, 2003
Q Heart disease runs in my family, and I'm concerned about reports of something called "silent" heart attacks. What can you tell me about them?
V.S., Washington, D.C.
A Doctors say there is no chest pain associated with silent heart attacks, and the victim usually becomes easily fatigued and experiences shortness of breath. That's especially true if the person has diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease.
Researchers say as many as 25 percent of diabetics who have suffered a heart attack never experienced the usual warning symptoms, including chest pain.
