CAPTION: Fifty years ago, to the month (December 7-9, 1953), in one of the great legal confrontations of American history, former presidential candidate JOHN W. DAVIS (I.) defending segregation, and THURGOOD MARSHALL, calling for desegregation, appeared before the Supreme Court in the now-famous Brown v. Board of Education case. Assistant Attorney General J. LEE RANKIN (c.), representing the Justice Department, argued against segregation. National leaders have declared a year of celebration and dedication leading up to the day, May 17, 1954, the Court decided the case in favor of Marshall, Black America, and the future.
