Two famed artists have combined talents to produce a Christmas celebration in song and in art. In their new book, O HOLY NIGHT: CHRISTMAS WITH THE BOYS CHOIR OF HARLEM/Pictures by Faith Ringgold (HarperCollins Publishers, $18.99), the artist illustrates the Christmas story according to the Gospel of Luke plus the words to five popular Christmas carols--"Silent Night," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "O Holy Night" "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "Joy to the World"--on an accompanying CD by the Boys Choir of Harlem. The vivid images and beloved carols illustrate the spiritual vitality of the Christmas story, and the book promises to become a new family Christmas memory.
In JOY UNSPEAKABLE: CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICES OF THE BLACK CHURCH (Fortress Press, $19.00), Barbara A. Holmes chronicles Black church worship practices from slavery to the present. The author describes the journey inward and the cultural and spiritual history with illustrations from the spiritual lives of Augustine, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Howard Thurman and his wife, Sue Bailey Thurman.
