IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, Iris Smith won the gold medal in the women's 159-pound division at the 2005 World Championships, becoming the first U.S. African-American woman to win a world gold medal in wrestling. The U.S. Army sergeant defeated Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan, who previously had won five world gold medals in the event and was the heavy favorite to win again this year.
