'Small miracles' - Letters to the editor - Letter to the Editor
Ebony, Jan, 2004 by Matthew E. Drane
Thank you for the powerful article, "Small Miracles: New Hope For Black Adoptions" (Nov. 2003). This article was remarkable because it discussed an apparent concern that needs to be addressed by the African-American community. The future of the Black race is dependent upon our children, including the approximate 206,000 who are in foster care.
I agree it is imperative that we, as African-Americans, adopt our children so that we can preserve our beloved culture and heritage. There is no better model for a young Black boy to have than a loving and strong Black father.
It is wonderful that interracial adoptions are taking place. I respect all families who adopt, regardless of race, and skin color. However, I feel that no one can teach children about who they are better than someone who looks like them.
Let us, the Black community, come together and tend to the needs of our children and enhance our future.
