Children, poison and Ipecac - House Call - Brief Article

Ebony, Jan, 2004

Q I keep Ipecac on hand, just in case my children accidentally get a hold of something poisonous. Why is that no longer a good idea?

H.B., Camden, N.J.

A You and thousands of other mothers have taken the same precaution for many years, but a recent study indicates that Ipecac, used to induce vomiting, is not as effective as it was believed to be. Researchers say when someone vomits, the stomach, contrary to popular thought, is not completely emptied.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now encourages poison prevention and is directing parents and caregivers to call their local poison center if a child has swallowed a toxic or poisonous substance.
