The Soweto Gospel Choir
Ebony, Jan, 2005 by Lynn Norment
THE Soweto Gospel Choir introduces its magnetic energy, joyful spirits and glorious harmonies to U.S. audiences with its American debut, Voices From Heaven (Shanachie). The awe-inspiring vocal ensemble performs in eight different languages and sometimes a capella. Its repertoire includes tribal, traditional and popular African gospel.
Created in 2002, the choir has performed throughout Africa, Europe and Australia in sold-out venues, prompting rave reviews and standing ovations. The choir's exotic blend of South African spirituals, traditional Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho gospel songs are interspersed with popular songs and folk anthems. Their performances of the hymn "Amazing Grace" as well as Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross," will simply delight U.S. listeners. (The choir will embark on an 35-city U.S. tour starting in January.)
