Artist spotlight Ruben
Ebony, Feb, 2005
RUBEN STUDDARD delivers another great recording to his growing league of fans, but this time we are blessed with a gospel set, I Need an Angel (J Records). His title song is a spirited, catchy anthem that was written and produced by R. Kelly. The American Idol winner who started singing in church as a child delivers his take on a number of gospel classics, including "Center of My Joy" and a touching cover of Edwin Hawkins' "Goin' Up Yonder." A favorite is his reassuring rendition of "Ain't No Need To Worry," made popular by The Winans and Anita Baker in the late "80s.
Studdard is joined by Harvey Watkins Jr. on Watkins' "Fix It, Jesus," which is reminiscent of southern gospel quartets, And Fred Hammond wrote and is featured on "We Have Not Forgotten." Ruben also covers traditional hymns, such as "Amazing Grace" and the comforting "I Surrender All"; on both he delivers touching performances that will take listeners to Sunday services, By focusing on songs that played an important role in his life, Studdard gives new meaning to some gospel classics.
