LIZZ WRIGHT shares her infectious blues-jazz vocal artistry on The Orchard (Verve Forecast). She intro-set with the melancholy "Coming Home," which she co-wrote with noted singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon. (In fact, Wright co-wrote eight of the 12 songs, while Reagon co-wrote six and sings background on several as well.) The second cut, "My Heart," is a vibrant serenade of her devotion to her man. Then there is Wright's cover of Ike Turner's bluesy, honky-tonk "I Idolize You," which was featured on an episode of the television show The longing "Hey Mann," written by Bernice Johnson founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock (and Toshi Reagon's mom), asks "how did you get here, in my heart without consent?" Other standouts include the sassy "Leave Me Standing Alone" and the beautiful "Speak Your Heart," which showcases Wright's vocal range. One critic has called her "remarkable," and she lives up to that adjective as she enthralls and tugs at the heart of listeners with yet another soulful set of riveting songs from the depth of her heart.
