Ebony,  March, 2004

SHIRLEY CHISHOLM became the first Black woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives when she defeated former Congress of Racial Equality director James Farmer on November 5, 1968. The new congresswoman--from the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn--opened the door for other Black women, and today there are 3 Black females in Congress.
