LONG before the Black is Beautiful era, Black campus queens taught us that true beauty is internal as well as external and that beauty is what beauty does.
The 92 Black college queens of 2001 are living embodiments of that ancient tradition, for they excel in academics as well as campus and community leadership, and they are determined to make a difference in education, literature, media, medicine, and law.
Beginning at the end of the alphabet, the 2001 list includes African-American queens from historically Black colleges and universities as well as the increasing number of Sisters who preside over historically White campuses like the University of North Carolina and the University of Connecticut.
Brandy G. Moore is Miss Lincoln University (Mo.). The student government association member belongs to the dance troupe and plans to become a teacher
Irene LaTrice Alexis is Miss Fort Valley State University. she is a Savannah, Ga., native and business marketing major.
Lena Collins is Miss University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The student government association member intends to become an international public relations consultant.
Alysha N. McGee is a political science major and Miss Texas College. The Detroit native debates and wants to be a lawyer.
Megan Lynette Richmond is Miss Jackson State University. The Madison, Miss. native is a speech/communicative disorders major and enjoys singing.
Kimberly Nichole Carter is Miss Xavier University. The Decatur, Ga., native is a senior majoring in biology/pre-medicine.
Erica L. Allen, Miss West Virginia State College, is a senior communications major from Tampa, Fla.
Miss University of the Virgin Islands is Lindsay Brockington of New York City, a junior speech and theater major.
Miss Tuskegee University is Makeecha Tenale Reed, a senior biology major from Charlotte, who plans to become a doctor.
Kendra Donta Lipscomb, a senior elementary education major from Richmond, Va., is Miss Winston-Salem State University.
Miss Voorhees College is LaShondra Shamell Dickerson. She is a senior sociology major who enjoys dancing and playing the snare drum.
J'Naudia Danielle Hunter is Miss University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, who wants to teach and attend law school.
Miss Tougaloo College, a Jackson, Miss., native, is Rukia Kia Lumumba, a political science and international relations major.
Miss Wiley College, Candace Calloway, is a native of Marshall, Texas. She is on both the Dean's and President's lists.
Miss Virginia Union University, Janiel Evette Montgomery, is a Glassboro, N.J., native. She is a member of the concert choir.
Shonita Frazier, a health and physical education major, is Miss University of The District of Columbia.
Kanika F. Bazzell, Miss Texas Southern University, is a senior health education major who is active in community service.
Miss Wilborforce University, Donte Harris, is a Charleston, W. Va., native. The choir member also likes sports and reading.
Remy Nichols Jones, Miss Virginia State University, is a Richmond, Va., native. The psychology major delights in reading.
Danielle Renee Spearman, Miss University of Connecticut, is the first Black homecoming queen in the school's history.
Tamara S. Moore, Miss Tennessee State University, is a pre-dentistry major who plans to attend dental school.
Autumn Lenett McClure, a senior and history major, is Miss Talladega College. She enjoys ballet dancing and reading.
Miss Southern University at Shreveport is Crystal Monique Bobo, who is a secondary education major.
Crystal Athena Moore, a senior and biology major, is Miss Shaw University. She is a native of Savannah, Ga.
Miss Rust College, Bronwyn Denise Allen, is a senior and a vocal performance major from Winona, Miss.
Miss Stillman College, Victoria Bowen, a history major from Birmingham, Ala., wants to become a corporate lawyer.
Tamika Fenceroy Harrison is Miss Southern University at New Orleans. She is a psychology major from New Orleans.
Tiffany Renee Fountain, Miss Savannah State University, is a senior and criminal justice major and a New York native.
Miss Prairie View A&M University is Kimberly Pierson. The Texarkana, Texas, native wants to work as a TV news anchor.
Leah D. Jackson is Miss Spelman College. The Detroit native is a public policy and child advocacy major who mentors youth.
Miss Southern University at Baton Rouge is Shantrice Hilton. She is majoring in therapeutic recreation.
Portia Joyner, a Virginia Beach, Va., native, is Miss Saint Paul's College. She is a sociology major who likes to read.
Autumn Dawn Simmons is Miss Philander Smith College. A business administration major, she wants to study law.
Crystal Rose Anderson, a Mesquite, Texas, native, is Miss Southwestern Christian College. She is a pre-med major.
Miss South Carolina State University, Chrystal Danine Ages, is a senior majoring in math education. She is from Akron, Ohio.
Asha Bre Felder is Miss Saint Augustine's College. She is a senior and communications major from Milwaukee.
