Sounding off. . - The Best In Recorded Music - 'Rural Renewal' - 'Donnie McClurkin … Again' - sound recording review
Ebony, April, 2003 by Lynn Norment
THE CRUSADERS are back and kicking with a new recording, Rural Renewal (Verve). After a 20-year separation, the legendary group has reunited to deliver a vibrant set that reminds listeners how endearing and enduring the talented jazz combo is. Original Crusaders Joe Sample (back on keys), saxman Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper are joined by trombonist Steve Baxter. Sample composes several songs, including "The Territory, "Viva De Funk" and "Creepin,'" while Felder composes "Goin' Home" and "Heartland," and Hooper contributes "Greasy Spoon." Donnie McClurkin lends his distinctive voice to "Sing the Song" and "A Healing Coming On," which also features Sounds of Blackness.
DONNIE McCLURKIN followers will be delighted to learn that his new album, Donnie McClurkin ... Again (Verity) is just as wonderful as his Live In London. McClurkin's dynamic, unique sound and wonderful vocals continue to minister to the hearts of listeners. There is the soul-stirring praise and worship tune "Holy." The debut single "The Prayer," which features a duet with Yolanda Adams, is sure to bring comfort to every soul. "Yes You Can" and "I'm Walking" are uplifting songs, with the latter being seasoned with a dash of Caribbean flavor. The recording's most moving and touching tune is "He's Calling You," which closes the set with an invitation to open one's heart to God. Inspired by Pastor McClurkin, it should be an easy decision to make.
