Richard Pryor

Ebony,  April, 2006  by Pearl Gooden

As a child growing up in Sumter, S.C., Black people of all walks of life gathered around the old black and

white TV set to watch Richard Pryor ("Remembering The Genius of Richard Pryor," Feb. 2006).

Richard Pryor was the groundbreaker. He showed us that you can be Black and have a Black voice and be successful. Like few other entertainers, Richard Pryor found success in his own terms.

He used the stage to tell his unique story as only Richard Pryor could. Pryor was special! He made pain funny. He was loved, and he'll be greatly missed.
