Cassandra Wilson

Ebony,  April, 2006  by Lynn Norment

With her signature sensuous, velvety vocals, CASSANDRA WILSON delivers another masterful set of bluesy jazz with Thunderbird (Blue Note). Wilson wrote or co-wrote several of the tunes, including the breezy, easy "Go to Mexico," which inspires the body to move. She takes the tempo down a notch with the romantic, sultry "Closer to You," "Lost" and "It Would Be So Easy," and then eases into the mournful, melancholy "Easy Rider" and "Red River Valley." The Grammy Award winner's cover of bluesman Willie Dixon's "I Want to be Loved" is spiced with emphatic guitar work.

For this outstanding project, Wilson collaborated with producer T Bone Burnett, whom she calls the glue that kept it altogether and adds that his "secret ingredients" added that "aural special something."
