Acetaminophen and pain
Ebony, April, 2006
Q I'm a 44-year-old, busy woman who has routine aches and pains like thousands of other people. When the pain gets too bad, I take pain relievers that include the ingredient acetaminophen, and recently I find out that there could be some problems associated with acetaminophen. What should I be worried about if I continue to take pain relievers that include this ingredient?

A As it is with any medication, proper dosage is perhaps the most important consideration to prevent problems. That is particularly true, doctors say, when it comes to pain relievers, which, if abused, can cause a number of problems.
When used properly, side effects are rare, but large doses of acetaminophen can cause severe liver damage, especially, researchers say, if it is mixed with alcohol. The damage is more likely to occur when acetaminophen is taken after, rather than before, the alcohol has begun to metabolize.
Acetaminophen is the most widely used pharmaceutical analgesic in the world, contained in more than 100 products.
