New DG enters the frame
Ebony, May, 1999
In a move that highlights its desire to maintain strong leadership in the Association, the Board of BASEA has appointed Mr Chris Preece as its new Director General.
Announcing the appointment, Chairman Mike Doane said: "We have appointed a professional manager with experience across the widest spectrum of our industry to bring to our Association his wealth of experience in promoting British goods and services in overseas markets".
Chris's experience of the civil aviation industry includes long service with British Airways at home and overseas, the role of market Development Director with British Aerospace's former Civil Aircraft Operations Division and the Managing Directorship of Liverpool Airport. He combines his BASEA role with the management of Falcon Consultancy Limited, a company engaged in business consultancy to airlines and airports.
Through his previous roles, Chris had become a firm supporter of BASEA, extolling the diversity, technology and quality of Britain's airport suppliers. He expressed delight at his appointment and looks forward to playing his part in securing the ongoing success of the membership (sales of over L500 million in 1998).
Recognising the growing competition from international suppliers in this industry, Chris plans to review the services offered by the Association, ensuring that they continue to match the changing needs of the Members. Issues to be considered will include the role of the Association in the context of the European Union and the relationship of the Association with those Government Agencies and Departments that may be supportive in overseas markets.
In 1999, BASEA exhibitions are planned in Australia, Singapore and Germany while there will also be a programme of dedicated airport trade Missions. Chris expects these to play their part in filling the members' order books.
Chris is concerned at the possibility of an international recession, but tempers this with optimism founded upon his experience of the historic resilience of civil aviation industry.
"Our UK suppliers offer airport owners and operators a comprehensive package of proven services and equipment, second to none in quality and functionality," he said. "Where operational safety, security, reliability and efficiency are paramount, dependable after sale support is essential and best value for money is the commercial imperative, BASEA's member companies present the best option for a prospective buyer."
