Black Heritage stamps

Ebony, May, 2004 by Cynthia Puryear

There's a powerful e-mail circulating that says the United States Postal Service will discontinue Black Heritage commemorative stamps. Nothing could be further from the truth! The U.S. Postal Service has no intention of discontinuing our Black Heritage stamp series or the depiction of African-Americans on stamps. The Black Heritage series is one of the most popular of the Postal Service's U.S. commemorative stamp series. In fact, customer demand for these educational stamps has been so great that the Postal Service has increased the quantity produced over the past few years.

On January 20, 2004, we issued the Paul Robeson commemorative stamp, the 27th stamp in the series, which began in 1978 with a stamp honoring Harriet Tubman.

If the local post office is sold out, the Robeson stamp and others, including one honoring Thurgood Marshall, can be purchased by calling 1/800-STAMP-24 or online at at www.usps.com/shop.> Cynthia Puryear
