Boosting women's libido

Ebony, May, 2004

Q I am a 43-year-old woman who is in good shape and likes to have a good time. I'm so tired of hearing about the Viagra-like pills that are designed for men with sexual performance problems. What about women like me, whose libido is not what it used to be? Is there any help for us?

T.A., Los Angeles

A You are exhibiting the sentiments of thousands of outspoken women who feel that their interest in sex is secondary to that of men. Since the introduction of Viagra for men, more and more women have been making it clear that they enjoy sex, too, but, like a number of men, some experience problems that interfere with a healthy sex life.

As you mentioned in your letter, many women, like you, complain primarily about their lack of sexual arousal. In some studies, researchers say an astonishing 68 percent of women experience low libido and have no sexual motivation.

While researchers continue to search for a Viagra-like solution for women, sex experts say there is help in the form of gels, pills and creams--practically all claiming to "enhance libido and stimulate orgasmic pleasure." Users, however, should understand that while these products boast of increasing blood flow to the genitals to enhance sexual arousal, the results can be different for each individual.

If you are considering using any of these products, it's a good idea to see your physician first, not only to talk about the possibilities but to get an examination.
