Richard Williams: Venus And Serena's Father Whips The Pros And Makes His Family No.1 In Tennis
Ebony, June, 2000 by Kevin Chappell
Williams remembers walking home with Venus that day and telling his wife what had happened. "I told her that we have a winner," he says. "She said, `No, you're just a proud father.' I said, `No, this girl is a winner.' She said, `Well, how do you know?' I told her Venus demonstrated all four qualities of a champion. No matter what age, all champions are able to demonstrate that they are rough, they are tough, they are strong, and they are mentally sound. You cannot teach that. That is a God-given quality, and Venus demonstrated that on the first day."
Williams says life for the family was simple then. Today, he has been focused on not letting Venus and Serena get sucked into the politics surrounding the game of professional tennis.
He says he looks forward to the day when both of his daughters retire from tennis and move farther away from the media spotlight. "I'll be glad when it's all over," says Williams, who recently encouraged Venus to take some time off to heal tendinitis in her wrists. "But it's a very difficult decision for them to make when people are offering them all of this money. But money's not everything"
Just another kernel of wisdom from Richard Williams. And who would dare argue with him? He hasn't been wrong yet.
