Penile implant removal

Ebony, July, 2004

Q I had a "mini-stroke" in 1990, and two years later I got a penile implant. I should have waited because I didn't know all of these pills to help erectile problems would come on the market so soon. Now I want to know if the implant can be removed.

A.I., Ohio

A You are like many other men who, for whatever reason, had a penile implant some time ago, but choose now to take advantage of the new medical approaches to correct their bouts with erectile dysfunction.

Fortunately for you, doctors say a penile implant, which replaces the spongy tissue inside the penis that fills with blood during an erection, can be removed without too much difficulty. However, as it is with any surgical procedure, there is a chance of infection. Following removal of the implant, the time frame for the presentation for infection will vary depending on the bacteria involved. As is the case with the original surgery, infections with more aggressive bacteria will usually appear within the first few days to weeks after the removal of the implant, and normally will be accompanied by fever, pain and swelling. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to be used for up to two weeks after the surgery to prevent infection.

After the removal is complete, your doctor can recommend a number of new medications that are designed to help men who suffer from a variety of erectile dysfunction.
