The 'second wind' mystery

Ebony, July, 2004

Q I'm a routine runner. Can you tell me what happens when you get a second wind?

T.J., San Francisco

A The second wind, a point when you suddenly feel refreshed during exertion, is actually a release of endorphins into the blood stream, and corresponds to your body using the diaphragm to breathe rather than the muscles of the upper chest.
