Dr. Marvalene Hughes: President, Dillard University

Dr. Marvalene Hughes is president of Dillard University in New Orleans, the first woman to hold the position permanently, succeeding interim president Dr. Bettye Parker Smith. Formerly the president of California State University, Stanislaus, Hughes has held executive positions at the University of Minnesota, the University of Toledo, Arizona State University and San Diego State University.
"I now take on a very special challenge--one of personal passion and extreme importance--the presidency of Dillard University, one of America's outstanding private liberal arts universities. I owe much of my early training and inspiration to the instruction and close mentoring I received at an historically Black university." Hughes is a member of several local and national boards, has written numerous publications and speaks throughout the United States and abroad. At Tuskegee University, she received a bachelor of science degree in English and history, and a master of science degree in counseling and administration. She has a Ph.D. from Florida State University and completed postdoctorate work at Harvard University MLE Summer Institute and Oxford University Round Table. She is married and has three adult children.
