Lizz Wright: sultry earthy soul is back

Ebony,  July, 2005  by Lynn Norment

LIZZ WRIGHT is back with a soulful, jazzy followup to her debut CD. The new recording, Dreaming Wide Awake (Verve Music Group), again delights and soothes the spirit with her earthy, full-bodied voice that so perfectly delivers songs that she wrote or took ownership of with her mesmerizing performance.

At times she is sensuous ("A Taste of Honey") or even sassy ("Trouble"); at other times wishful ("When I Close My Eyes"), and sometimes she's melancholy, even mournful ("Hit the Ground"), co-written with Jesse Harris and Toshi Reagon. Mark Anthony Thompson wrote, plays harmonica and sings background vocals on "Chasing Strange." Throughout the performance, Wright entertains and intrigues. She is destined to be a refreshing fixture on the music scene.
