A Hard Road to Glory: A History of The African-American Athlete (Warner Books, first published in 1988): In this three-volume set, tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr. provides a broad look at the history of the Black athlete in the United States. Ashe traces the development of the Black athlete from ancestral African homelands in the 17th century to the present.

He charts the end of segregation in professional sports and the rise of black athletes to the widely imitated superstar status that many of them enjoy today.
