Cars for 1990: improvements that enhance performance, safety and comfort ring in a new decade of high-tech automobiles

Ebony, Nov, 1989

* Visit several dealers before deciding on the one you want to deal with.

* Test drive the car to check performance and comfort.

* It is not imperative, but it could help you if you know dealer cost before negotiating. Price guides are available at bookstores and in some libraries.

* If discount financing is available, try to get the best offer first, and then discuss the loan.

* Remember, low financing, such as 0 percent, 2.9 percent or thereabouts, is no clue to a good deal because in most cases, the loans must be paid within two years. Read the fine print!

* Car dealers and automakers offer good financing deals, but you may be able to do better with your bank or credit union.

* If you need to trade in your current car, check a used-car guide or newspaper classified ads for a gauge of your car's market value. Or, you may want to sell the car yourself to a private buyer for a better deal than is offered by your dealer.
