Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasilerias 1, 5 and 7
Ebony, April, 1989 by Charles L. Sanders
Bachianas Brasilerias
Opera star Barbara Hendricks is heard to great advantage on Bachianas Brasilerias (EMI/Angel DS 38334), which features three of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos' hauntingly lovely melodies that were influenced by the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. On this album, Miss Hendricks does melodies number one, five and seven, with Enrique Batiz conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Eldon Fox playing solo cello. Although a digital recording, EMI/Angel has worked its magic and avoided the shrillness and hard-edged sound often associated with that medium.
