Theory of Art
There are few more celebrated names in jazz than that of Art Blakey, the legendary drummer and leader of The Jazz Messengers. The album Theory of Art (RCA/Bluebird 6286-1-RB) is a remastering of two performances in New York City on April 2 and April 8, 1957, and features such consummate artists as Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Cecil Payne (baritone sax), Sahib Shihab and Jackie McLean (alto sax), Lee Morgan and Bill Hardman (trumpet), Melba Liston (trombone), Wynton Kelly and Sam Dockery (piano), Jimmy (Spanky) DeBrest (bass) and, of course, Maestro Blakey himself. Tunes include A Night In Tunisia, Couldn't It Be You and the lovely Evans, penned by Sonny Rollins.
