Campus Queens At Black Colleges
BRIGHT, well-rounded and ambitious are terms that best describe the 1989 campus queens at historically Black colleges and universities. Many are honor students and are members of national student professional groups. Some have made the National Dean's List and Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities.
More than just book-smart, these 81 coeds are involved and committed. Nearly all are in student government associations. Some sit on national commissions of their sororities. Others are active in anti-apartheid efforts, work with disabled high school students, and tackle teenage pregnancy and drug-abuse problems in off-campus communities.
Their hobbies are as diverse as their hometowns. They hail from small towns such as Wyncote, Pa.; Garysburg, N.C.; and Isola, Miss., as well as big cities--Washington, D.C., Chicago, Cleveland and Atlanta, Ga. Most of the young women enjoy traveling. In addition, a few practice martial arts, hike, listen to jazz or perform in symphony orchestras.
