Aquarela Do Brazil

Ebony, April, 1995 by Lynn Norment

Dionne Warwick is as melodically smooth and entertaining as ever on her current release, Aquarela Do Brazil (Arista). On this collection of Brazilian songs (the title translates to Watercolors of Brazil), Warwick sings in both English and Portuguese. She also co-wrote three songs, "Virou Areia," "Oh Bahia" and "Samba Dobrado." Also delightful are duets with Dori Caymmi ("Flower Of Bahia") and Chico Buarque ("Piano Na Mangueira").

On "Heart Of Brazil," a duet with protegee Eliana Estevao, Warwick addresses environmental concerns. A favorite is Burt Bacharach's easy-flowing "Captives Of The Heart." With the assistance of producer Teo Lima, Warwick recorded the rhythm tracks and lead vocals in Rio de Janeiro, and employed Brazilian musicians. The result is a recording that transports the listener to the exotic, rhythmic shores of the expansive South American country.
