Howard Hewett. - sound recording reviews
Ebony, June, 1990 by Lynn Norment
Howard Hewett
HIS has been described as "one of the most beautiful male voices" in pop and soul music, and Howard Hewett delivers just that on his newest self-titled recording (Elektra). From the LP's opening duet, When Will It Be, a soulful plea for peace and freedom he performs with sultry Anita Baker, Hewett's spiritual and sensuous vocal powers are in fine form. He co-authored five of the 11 tunes, including the closing gospel-flavored Jesus, the romantic single Show Me and the yearning Let's Get Deeper. Hewett says that this romantically flavored, super-mellow album represents what he is all about as an individual. "I believe that singing is a gift God gave me," he says. "Along with that comes the responsibility to try to portray the kind of life that compliments that belief."
