1993 annual baseball roundup - African American baseball players in the American and National Leagues - Illustration

Ebony, June, 1993

SINCE the 1992 season ended with the Toronto Blue Jays' victory in the World Series, Major League Baseball has experienced some significant changes--the addition of new franchises, efforts to speed up the games, and there are some old faces in new places.

The National League gained two more teams through expansion--the Florida Marlins in Miami and Denver welcomed the Colorado Rockies, managed by former All-Star Don Baylor, one of the game's six minority managers.

There also was movement among the players, and some of the game's biggest names are modeling new uniforms this year. The list includes Barry Bonds, who left Pittsburgh for San Francisco; Dave Stewart, who moved from Oakland to Toronto; and Dave Winfield, who left the world champion Toronto Blue Jays and returned to his home state to play with the Minnesota Twins.

This season also offers fans the opportunity to continue to follow the progress of some of the game's younger players like Pat Listach, the shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers who won the American League Rookie-of-the-Year Award last year.

On the following pages, in this year's roundup, is a collection of African-American players who are making their marks in Major League Baseball.
