Creating A Shady Summer Retreat

THE FINALE: INSTALLING YOUR FOCAL POINT AND PLANTING

You'll probably want to install paths and major focal points like ponds, waterfalls or streams at the same time you amend the soil. You can put smaller features like benches and garden sculptures in place later.

Mark plant locations with Popsicle sticks or small stakes labeled with the plants' names. Then count up the number of each kind of plant you need, and go for it!

Now you are ready to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. As you see your plan come to life before your eyes, you will know you've met the challenge of hot, sunny days. You will be able to escape to your own private oasis of coolness and shade.

Jinny Ravenscroft Danzer is a writer and long-time gardener in St. Louis, Missouri.
