As gardeners prepare to make the transition from cold to warm and gray to green, somewhere there's a demonstration gardener making tulips bloom and ornamental grasses grow -- or at least appear to -- in a downtown convention center. This seemingly miraculous sleight of trowel will inspire thousands of us to attempt similar feats in our own back yards (which is considerably easier without a corrugated metal roof over your planting beds). As you leave the building, you may scratch your head and wonder, "How'd they do that?" but by season's end you will be performing some magic of your own at home.
