Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum
Flower & Garden Magazine, March-April, 1997 by Ellen Henke
Today the arboretum fulfills its educational function with its interactive nature trails and demonstration gardens, which exhibit groundcovers for erosion control in the desert, a dry meadow display and a xeriscape garden. Xeriscaping is simply the grouping together of plants with similar water requirements in order to conserve water. This concept is important to gardeners in most climates, not only in the desert.
The arboretum also features guided tours for school children and an artist-in-residence program, as well as opportunities for research scientists and students from around the world. The museum houses exhibits of plants used by Arizona Indians, displays on local geology and history, and photographs of nearby points of interest. Desert plant enthusiasts can purchase unique and difficult-to-obtain specimens that are propagated at the arboretum.
