Mason jar bonnet doily

Materials: Jiffy Tatting Needle

No. 00 and a threader; pair of

scissors and an embroidery needle; 1

ball DMC No. 8 white; 1 3- by 4- inch

piece of cardboard; 42 inches

of red satin ribbon 3/8-inch-wide.

Finished Measurements: 6 inches

in diameter

Step 1 Wind 9 yards of white

thread from the ball onto a piece of

cardboard as a ball for the carrying

cord (cc).

Step 2 RND

1 Cut 1-1/2 yard strand of thread

from the cardboard ball, double it

and thread the Jiffy Tatting Needle

(JTN) for a cc. Pick up end from

ball, leave a 3 inch end. R 8 ds, p, 2

ds, p, 8 ds, sson, cl, r. Ch 10 dsb, p, 2

dsb, p, 10 dsb, sson. (You may have

to use your left thumb nail to start

the dsb off the JTN. Avoid bunching

knots.)

*R 8 ds, j to the last p in previous

r, 2 ds, sson. Repeat from *5

more times. R 8 ds, j to last p of

previous r, 2 ds, j to first p in first r, 8 ds,

sson, cl r. Ch 10 dsb, p, 2 dsb, p, 10

dsb, sson. Run JTN up center of the

cc and cinch to base of r. Remove

JTN. Work in ends and trim.

RND 2 cut 1-1/2-yard strand of

thread from the cardboard ball for

cc. Double it and thread JTN.

* R 5 ds, j to the right p in any ch

of the previous rnd. Be sure right

side faces you. 2 ds, j to next p in

same ch, 5 ds, sson, cl

r. Ch 3 p sep by 8

dsb, begin and end with 8 dsb, sson.

Repeat from *7 more times. Run

JTN up center of first r and back

between the strands of the cc and

cinch to base of r. Remove JTN,

work in ends and trim.

RND 3 Cut a 2-yard strand of

thread from the cardboard ball,

double it and thread JTN for a cc.

Attach loop end of cc to the left p of

any ch in previous rnd by running

JTN through p and then through

the loop of the cc and cinch to

(Avoid pulling on p.)

Working clockwise, * ch 9 ds, p 9

ds, sson. Attach to next p to &

right in same ch in previous md by

running JTN through p and back

between the strands of the cc and

cinch to p. (Avoid pulling on p.)

Repeat from * 23 more times, each

time joining ch to next p. Remove

JTN. Work in ends and trim.

RND 4 Cut 3-1/2-yard strand

from cardboard ball, double it and

thread JTN for a cc. * R 4 ds, p, 4 ds,

pick up the work with right side facing

you. Join to p in right middle ch

of previous rnd (not the ch that is

over the ring in the previous rnd), 4

ds, p 4 ds, sson, cl r. Ch 6 dsb, p

(make 1/2 inch long, which should

be about twice the length of a regular

fingertip when open on the JTN

in all chains throughout this rnd). 2

dsb, p, 6 dsb, sson. R 4 ds, j to last p

of previous r, 4 ds, j to next p in next

ch of previous rnd, 4 ds, p, 4 ds,

sson, cl r. Ch 6 dsb, p, 2 dsb, p, sson.

R 4 ds, j to last p in previous rnd,

4 ds, p, 4 ds, sson, cl r (small ring).

Ch 6 dsb, p, 2 dsb, p, 6 dsb, sson. R

4 dsb, j to last p in previous small r,

4 ds, j to p in next ch in previous

rnd, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, sson, cl r. Ch 6

dsb, p, 2 dsb, p, 6 dsb, sson. R 4 ds,

j to last p of r in previous rnd, 4 ds,

sson, cl r (second small ring). Ch 6

dsb, p, 2 dsb, p, 6 dsb, sson.

Repeat from * 7 more times

except j first p in first r in each set

to last p of previous r and when

you get to the last p in the last

small r, join to the first p in the

first r. End with ch 6 dsb, p, 2 dsb,

p, 6 dsb, sson. J chain to base of

first r by running JTN up center

of r and back between the two

strands of the cc and cinch to base

of r. Remove JTN. Work in ends

and trim.

Step 3 Cut ribbon in half and

weave ribbon into the chain rnd

(the third md). Tie the cover over

the mason jar with a bow.
