Petronio Goes British - Stephen Petronio chooses British collaborators for his new work - Brief Article

Dance Magazine, Oct, 2000 by Wendy Perron

The Stephen Petronio Company celebrates its fifteenth anniversary at New York's Joyce Theater October 17-22. Known for the intriguing tangling and untangling of movement, Petronio drew critical attention while dancing with the Trisha Brown Company in the early 1980s. For his new evening-length work, Strange Attractors, he has chosen British collaborators, including the Bombay-born sculptor Anish Kapoor; composer James Lavelle, who emerged from London's jazz scene; and Tanya Sarne, the creative force behind the recent U.K.

fashion success known as Ghost. Kapoor's set is a sphere that reflects light and movement. Michael Nyman, who wrote the score for the movie The Piano, provides additional music. When an early version of Strange Attractors appeared in San Francisco earlier this year, Dance Magazine reviewer Rita Felciano wrote that it "confirms Petronio as one of the most thoughtful and lyrical choreographers of his generation."
