A Glimpse from Boston's Rich Dance Past - Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn School of Dancing - Brief Article

Dance Magazine, Oct, 2001 by Robin Rice

Boston's Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn School of Dancing, one of seven Denishawn schools in the country, opened in 1923. Images of those who studied and performed there still survive and soon may be part of Boston's dance archives. [] The school was directed by Berthe and Francesca Braggiotti, two former students and part-time performers with St.

Denis and Shawn. According to its opening brochure, twenty-eight Denishawn dances were to be taught. A one-hour group class was typically $2, while a one-hour private class with Miss Braggiotti was $10. Among the offerings at school performances were St. Denis's The Nautch and Impromptu, both danced above by Marion Rice, who studied at the school. The photos currently belong to the New England-based dance company Marion Rice Denishawn.
