Nearly 170 dancers from thirty-six countries participated in the eighth Paris International Dance Competition in 1998; the ninth edition will be held November 16 to December 3 at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees and the Auditorium du Forum des Images. Recipients of the 2000 James Irvine Foundation and Arts International California Presenters Initiative Grants include: the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at California State University at Long Beach, which will present the Joe Goode Performance Group and Rennie Harris PureMovement; Richmond's East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, which will commission traditional and contemporary African music and dance and an African Choreographers Forum; El Camino College Center for the Arts in Torrance, which will present Donald Byrd's The Beast; the Irvine Barclay Theater in Irvine, which will inaugurate an international flamenco festival featuring Yaelisa; and San Francisco's ODC Theater, which will host an extended residency by the Cuban dance company Bran Rra Rra. Project grants are $75,000 each ... Fifteen-year-old Ashley Caterna, a student at Washington, D.C.'s Kirov Academy and the younger sister of Jackson medalist Adrienne Caterna, won the silver medal at this year's International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Kenneth Braso, Mikelle Bruzina and Claire Turman Greenlee were promoted from first soloists to soloists, and Robert La Turner and Delilah Smyth from corps de ballet to second soloists.
