Dance Magazine, Jan, 2003 by Ann Murphy
Here, in the Northern Hemisphere, winter usually means chilly rains, stinging sleet, or snow higher than the hay in summer. Luckily, whatever the weather, January is also the time we begin to think of summer. That's when we get to push ourselves to new limits. Our bodies bend in the heat, and during summer intensives we can pack what might seem like a whole year of training into a matter of weeks.
[] To help you through the maze of possibilities, we bring you our annual Summer Study Guide, with listings that run the gamut from the Betty Jones Technique and Repertory Workshop in New York City to an odissi intensive in Bhubaneswar, India. We provide specifics on how and when to apply, audition requirements, scholarship opportunities, and whether you can get room and board. [] To take you beyond the facts, Joseph Carman surveys the New York summer scene, taking the pulse of teenagers attending the Ailey and Joffrey schools. Sondra Lomax leads us to Texas, where Glenda Brown's choreography workshop trains dancers to be so mentally agile that they can change a dance on a dime and still call it choreography. Andrea Menotti's story on Curtain Call Explore Dance! Learning Camp for Dancers gives you another slant. Fifty-five girls spend a whirlwind five days in New York, learning the ins and outs of Broadway from the pros, taking technique classes, and seeing shows. There is something here for all of you. We hope you find it.
